I have long, heavy, thick hair. It takes me 1.5 to blow dry it, so washing it everyday is completely out of the question. However, due to the fridig winter air, constant hat-wearing makes it smell. One ‘n Only Brazilian Tech Keratin Smoothing Treatment

Lately, I’ve been testing out new deep conditioners and hair treatments to perk up my color-treated, chemically straightened hair. Lucky for me, my hair is super strong and resilient, but it is also chronically dry and mad thick. For the Love of Locks: Blind them all with Privé

There are two main ingredients to fabulous, knock-them-dead, hair. The first is frizzlessness – the second is shine. And though there is an ocean of products out there for addressing frizziness (and you’ve heard me sing their praises – or not! – often!), there are only a handful of shine serums that are actually worth while. Most spritz or serums just make your hair oily, requiring immediate washing. That’s not true, however, of Privé‘s Flash Brilliance or Shine Serum.

For the Love of Locks: How Eiji Salon’s Kenjiro Changed my Hair Forever

Until last week, I had what is called by industry professionals ‘virgin‘ hair. In other words, my hair is not dyed, not permed, not treated in any way. So when the opportunity to try out Eiji Salon‘s famous Straight Permanent arose, I was a little nervous.

But all my fears quickly dissipated upon meeting Kenjiro Maruyama, Eiji’s go-t0 man for perfect straight locks. Kenjiro explained to me in detail what a Straight Permanent is, how it works, how it would affect my hair, and how to maintain it.

Kenjiro detailed the difference between the Japanese and Brazilian treatment, (the former breaks down the molecular arrangement that gives your hair its unique shape – before restructuring it, while the latter contains high levels of formaldehyde and has been found to be carcinogenic) and why he preferred the former. However, he advised me, because it is much more precise and technical in its application than the Brazilian treatment, the Japanese treatment should only be performed by experienced stylists. But even more important, he stressed, is for us consumers to be informed and to know what to expect and what to demand. Here are a few tips:

1. Make sure you know beforehand which products will be used on your hair. Kenjiro uses and recommends Liscio, which works without damaging hair. The quality of the chemicals is integral to the health of our hair afterwards. Using the best products guarantees that you hair won’t end up damaged or lifeless.

2. A reputable place should protect your scalp during the straightening process. Kenjiro says that this step is often overlooked, and that even professional stylists who attend his classes neglect to do it. Kenjiro applies a healthy dose of pure mink oil to the scalp before applying any chemicals, helping keep your scalp and hair follicles healthy.

3. Don’t lie to your stylist! Providing Kenjiro with as much accurate information about my hair was equally crucial to the overall success of the treatment. In other words, informing him/her that you’ve colored, re-colored, highlighted, and then tried to go back to your natural color is very important. Why? It won’t keep you from proceeding with the treatment, but it will surely change the kind of chemicals applied to your hair and the amount of time they need to work.

4. “Straight hair is boring!” says Kenjiro. An experienced stylist won’t be happy to simply apply the straightener to your hair, which often results in limp, shapeless, locks. Instead, Kenjiro analyses the shape of your head and your desired hair style, and applies the treatment closer or farther from the roots accordingly. This helps create more or less volume closer to the roots, keeping your hair from just dangling from your scalp.

After: nothing but shinny sleek hair!

After 5 hours of sitting at Eiji Salon–a 3,200 square foot zen paradise–several shampoos, blow dries, heated lamps, and flat irons, I got up from my chair with sleek, smooth, shinny hair. No need to blow dry it, apply a flat iron, or anything else – though it looked like I had labored for hours to get that look!

Kenjiro sent me home with a short list of to-dos: a) keep hair dry for 48 hours, b) try to keep hair loose and scrunchy-free for 48 hours, c) add deep conditioning treatments to my hair routine. Simple enough, don’t you think?

Now, I am completely in love with my new hair – and with Kenjiro. Like a magician, he turned my thick dull hair into incredibly straight, silky, soft, and shinny hair. No more thickness, no more excess volume. When I walk down the street, light bounces off my hair, which moves freely with the breeze.
